Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico (Dec. 15, 2021) – In response to the December 7 incident at Playa Langosta beach where gunshots were fired, the State Government has announced that it has launched a full investigation into the matter. Furthermore, no one was injured during the isolated incident and the destination remains safe and open to visitors.
Authorities of the Coordination Group for Quintana Roo’s Peace and Security, a special police unit, intervened in a timely manner to avoid further consequences. The group works diligently to provide a safe and enjoyable vacation experience for tourists and visitors.
As part of the communication efforts to inform tourists about the State’s Guest Assist app, Quintana Roo’s State Secretary of Tourism (SEDETUR) participated in the Employers Confederation of the Mexican Republic (COPARMEX) Security Commission Forum on December 9th, 2021.
The Guest Assist app provides assistance and counseling for domestic and international travelers that visit the Mexican Caribbean in case of any emergency during their stay. The app can be downloaded for free and is currently available in Spanish and English with information on protocols for emergency situations, important information about COVID- 19 and legal advice. It also includes access to a 24/7 Call Center which connects to bilingual operators specializing in tourist and visitor assistance. At the Forum, participants were invited to download the Guest Assist App, available on iOS and Google Play, as well as online at www.guestassist.mx.
In performing these coordinated efforts, SEDETUR explains, the Mexican Caribbean will maintain its international tourism leadership and continue contributing to the economic recovery in job growth.
Present at the forum were Óscar Montes de Oca, Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo, Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, Ministry of State’s Public Security, Larissa Kreutz, Tourist Attention Director of SEDETUR, Sergio León, President of COPARMEX Quintana Roo, and Captain Manuel Herbeles, President of the Security State Commission for COPARMEX Quintana Roo.
The government of Quintana Roo headed by Governor Carlos Joaquin also announced the launch of its special security program in conjunction with the start of the winter holiday. This is in addition to the ongoing security and protection strategy that has been in place to provide safety and security for all visitors.
From January to October 2021, the Mexican Caribbean has received 11 million 283 thousand 672 visitors (preliminary data).
On December 8, the U.S. Department of State updated its Travel Advisory for Mexico nationwide amid the COVID 19 pandemic. In this case, Quintana Roo remains a safe destination to visit, and there are no travel restrictions for international visitors.
The Quintana Roo government and its State Police Department will continue to work hand in hand with federal and local agencies and the domestic and foreign private sector to keep order and peace, guaranteeing a safe environment for residents and visitors.
