Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico – The Emergency Operations Center of the Cancun International Airport (CUN) informed that at around 11:23am local time, an emergency alert was issued given an incident inside the airport, causing confusion of what had happened.
As part of the emergency protocols, federal agencies and Airport security initiated internal investigations to verify the incident.
After the investigation carried out by the authorities, it was confirmed that this was a false alarm caused by a loud noise triggered by the accidental falling of three signposts, each weighing approximately 50 kg, after being unintentionally pushed by a passenger who was rushing to reach a boarding gate.
The noise led to misinterpretation by airport users of that was heard. Emergency and evacuation protocols were activated for Terminal 3 to safeguard the integrity and security of airport users, workers and aircraft.
Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Public Security, Lucio Hernandez, confirmed that upon receiving a 911-emergency call, state police arrived at the scene and immediately supported federal agencies, as the airport is under federal jurisdiction.
After confirming the origin of the events, Airport operations were resumed at 2:23pm local time.
